What will I learn?

This qualification provides skills for individuals who wish to use sound knowledge of event management processes and a broad range of skills to coordinate event operations. When you study the Diploma you will learn how to operate independently and make operational event management decisions, venue selection, conference management, budgeting and team supervision.

Events are diverse in nature and this qualification provides a pathway to work for event or exhibition organisations operating in a range of industries, including the tourism and travel, hospitality, sport, cultural, and community sectors. Skills covered include registrations, staging, operations, customer service, finances and budgets, leadership and managing people, business relationships, projects and workplace safety. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 11 core units and 9 elective units.

Employment Outcomes

The diversity of employers includes event or exhibition management companies, event venues, or organisations that organise their own events. Work could be undertaken in an office environment where the planning of events takes place, on-site at venues where events are staged or a combination of both. Job titles may include conference coordinator, event or exhibition coordinator, event or exhibition planner, event sales coordinator, function coordinator, in-house meetings coordinator, meetings coordinator, staging coordinator, venue coordinator.

Business (Tourism and Event Management):

This highly regarded degree has been awarded the South Australian Tourism Award for Education and Training, and admitted to the SA Tourism Hall of Fame.

Our degrees are highly flexible and you can fast track your studies with our exciting summer and winter schools. By combining the Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Event Management) with another business degree, you may be able to graduate with two different degrees for one extra year of study, depending on your study plan.

What you'll learn:

The degree starts with core courses in business. These will give you a solid grasp of business fundamentals such as economics and accounting; business operations and intelligence. You will then go on to study specialised areas such as:

Marketing, service management and new technologies in tourism, events and hospitality
destination management

You can also gain valuable insight and career skills while you study, with internships in industry and exciting career-focused electives. Electives to choose from include Creative Tourism: Food, Wine and Festivals, Tourism and Indigenous Peoples or take part in a Business International Study Tour.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Minimum academic entry is completion of Year 12 or equivalent. IELTS Academic 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – iBT: Score of 46, with reading: 4-7, listening: 4-6, speaking: 14-15, and writing: 14-17; Pearsons Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum 42 with 36 in all for communicative skills ((listening, reading, writing and speaking); Occupational English Test OET: Pass; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE): Overall score of 162 with a minimum of 154 in all bands; Intensive English Language Institute (IELI): English for Academic Purposes 2 (C grade); GCE O Levels English/1119 English: C6.

For international students

  • Academic IELTS score of 5.5 Overall with minimum of 5.0 in all bands or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of Year 12 or overseas equivalent or Certificate III in Events.
