What will I learn?

This Doctor of Philosophy program sees candidates working with a Principal Supervisor, appointed by the Research Higher Degrees Sub Committee, with the approval of the School.

A minimum of three years and a maximum of four years (full-time equivalent), this degree is awarded on the basis of an eternally examined thesis of approximately 100,000 words.

Career opportunities

This degree adds to your existing teaching qualifications, which may allow you to apply for promotion in schools, building on your research experiences. The opportunity also exists for you to seek employment within schools systems in areas of Administration, Policy Development and Research. The degree is commonly a prerequisite for a career in higher education. A PhD is a transferrable qualification that has application (depending on the nature of the research) to government, industry, commerce and independent research centre employment.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a Bachelor degree and subsequent additional honors degree (first or second class); or Masters by Research degree; or current Federation University Australia Masters by Research candidate with sufficient research capability to demonstrate PhD capacity, assessed via a formal Confirmation of Candidature process; or Honors equivalence, for applicants who have completed a Master by coursework or have appropriate professional experience. All students must have previously completed a thesis or dissertation demonstrating the ability to undertake research at a PhD level. Academic IELTS: Overall 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL iBT: 79-93 with minimums: Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18, Writing 21; Pearson (PTE): Overall 58 (no band less than 50); Cambridge-CAE: Overall 176 (no band less than 169).
