What will I learn?

CQU English gives you the skills and confidence for everyday communication in English and academic study. We have highly qualified and dedicated teachers who can help you experience learning English in a supportive and caring environment. No matter what your English needs are, we can help you reach your goals. CQ University is proud to offer all students enrolling in a CQU English packaged pathway with an academic course, free English language courses in 2021. This offer is available for online and face-to-face teaching across our four CQU English Language Centres. Find out more below. Our CQU English classes are currently being delivered online until Australian borders open.

CQ University provides English language courses for international students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Courses include General English, EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and IELTS Preparation. We also run specialist courses, such as English for Aviation, providing a pathway to our Bachelor of Aviation (Commercial Pilot).

General English is for students with a current English language proficiency below IELTS 5.0. Our courses focus on developing all four English skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing), grammar and increasing your everyday vocabulary with a focus on developing accuracy and fluency. Our classes are dynamic and interactive. Typical classroom activities include participating in discussions on a range of topics, developing writing skills, and giving short oral presentations. Participating in group projects will help you develop teamwork skills while providing a supportive and fun environment to improve your English. Students receive lots of 1-1 feedback and support from our friendly and experienced teachers and build confidence in using English language skills.

Seven hundred and fifty million people speak English as a second language and 1 in 4 speak some English. With English becoming the unofficial language of the world, those who can speak it are well on their way to being truly global citizens. The universality of English means its speakers have an edge over others when it comes to finding employment as they will speak the language which is used for global communication.

Strong literacy skills, as taught in EAP classes, enhance conversational English and improve employment opportunities. A higher level band score from an IELTS exam or a pass in EAP Direct Entry provide global verification of the holder's English abilities for potential employers.

The overseas experience provided by studying English in Australia is often valued by employers as it demonstrates that the person can cope with living and working in another country. In addition, it shows that the language has been learned from native speakers in a native speaking country and not artificially from a book in a home-country classroom.

A pass in EAP or IELTS should fulfil the English language requirement for entry into many CQ University degree courses - the first step on the way to a university degree.

The ability to collect, evaluate and report on information which is taught in IELTS and EAP classes is invaluable for coping in a western style university or school as well as enhancing workplace performance.
