Geographic Information Science (GIScience) is a dynamic and exciting field essential to providing valuable location-based solutions and information to a range of disciplines and industries.

The graduate certificate helps professionals from a wide variety of areas acquire or build on their knowledge and skills. Graduates may go on to develop geospatial solutions that can be applied to health, planning, oil and gas, infrastructure, agriculture, mining and environment and other industries.

Through the study of two core units and two specialist options, you will be introduced to geographic information systems and begin to develop skills in the management and use of spatial data. This course offers the flexibility and convenience of studying on-campus, fully online or both.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria to qualify for one of our postgraduate coursework programs: Completed a bachelor degree awarded by a recognised tertiary institution. Some postgraduate courses may require a completed bachelor degree in a relevant field.

English language requirements: Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 176; and Pearson Test of English Academic: 60. IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System): Writing, Speaking, Reading, and Listening: 6.0; Overall band score: 6.5; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 79 Overall; Reading 13 Listening 13 Speaking 18 Writing 21.

Value of scholarship

PhD stipends at the Research Training Program base rate (AUD $27,596 in 2019), and/or top-up scholarships of AUD $10,000 p.a. PhD students can also receive up to AUD $5,000 to fund incidentals such as conference travel as part of the scheme.

Eligibility criteria

  • Students must not be subject to an obligation to a third party to provide that third party with rights to any IP created in the course of their degree.
  • Student must be enrolled at the university in a postgraduate research degree in a field of student in alignment with CSIRO’s research direction in information sciences and agriculture
  • Student must have an outstanding undergraduate record (the Student is expected to have obtained a first class honours degree or equivalent).  Students with Honours II div 1 are also eligible subject to evidence of research aptitude, such as publications in national and international journals.

2020 - Semester 1 - Curtin International Scholarships – CRL Merit Scholarship

Value of scholarship

This scholarship provides eligible students 10% of their first year tuition fee, up to a maximum of AUD $4,000.

All qualifying applications to Curtin are automatically assessed for the Curtin International CRL Merit Scholarship. No separate scholarship application is required.  

Admissions Office will assess each application accordingly and issue a supplementary letter, along with a Letter of Offer, to confirm whether the applicant has been successful.

To accept the scholarship, the recipient must:

  • Meet any conditions listed in their Letter of Offer
  • Have met or exceeded the higher academic cut-off specified by Curtin, specific to this scholarship.
  • Pay the indicative deposit and OSHC indicated in their Letter of Offer
  • Be aware of the dates and deadlines by which the above need to have been completed.

Eligibility requirements:

This scholarship is only for:

  • International, full fee-paying, non-sponsored students
  • Students commencing studies at Curtin’s Western Australia campuses in 2020
  • Students commencing a full Curtin undergraduate or master by coursework program
  • Students who have accepted their mainstream course offer by the 15th of December 2019
