What will I learn?

The Master of Information Technology degree is designed for IT professionals looking to update and extend their technical knowledge of advanced computing subjects, or move into a new IT specialisation. Internationally recognised, it can help advance your career in diverse fields such as software engineering, health, telecommunications and more.

The program is also an excellent retraining opportunity for professionals who want to specialise in a different area of IT. You have the flexibility to tailor your studies, with more than 25 IT specialist units as well units from electrical engineering and business to choose from.

Career Pathways

Graduates of the Master of Information Technology are IT specialists who possess an excellent combination of knowledge and practical, hands-on expertise to influence and reinforce an organisations technology infrastructure and to support the people who use it. They will often be responsible for selecting and deploying software products appropriate for an organisation. They may also be involved in creating and managing business applications, web sites, systems and the IT environment in all types of industries.

Future study options

The University of Sydney is a research intensive institution with a strong track record of technology transfer and commercialisation. Research activities in the School of Information Technologies focus on algorithmics and applications, enterprise computing, human-centred computing, and IT applications in health care. If you would like to be part of Sydney's IT research community, you may consider applying for admission to a higher degree by research. Students completing a research degree undertake supervised research and submit a written thesis at the completion of their studies in the degree of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy

Entry requirements

For international students

To be eligible for admission, an applicant is required to have:

an Australian bachelor’s degree in information technology with a credit average (65 percent), or equivalent qualification or

an Australian Bachelor of Engineering degree with a credit average (65 percent) and a major sequence of study in computer engineering, software engineering, or equivalent qualification or

a University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or Graduate Diploma in Computing, with a credit average (65 percent). Units completed in the graduate diploma/graduate certificate can be credited to the master’s degree.

IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band

TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing.

Pearsons Test of English: A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band

Application deadline: Jan/31 for Semester 1 and June/30 for semester 2.
