What will I learn?

This course enables qualified sonographers and echocardiographers wishing to undertake study in advanced practice to complete a postgraduate qualification. This is a natural top-up qualification to the graduate diploma of medical sonography or graduate diploma of echocardiography. Areas of advanced clinical practice include units in advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound upper body, advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound lower body, advanced obstetric ultrasound, advanced vascular ultrasound, advanced paediatric ultrasound, advanced imaging of congenital heart disease and fetal echocardiography.

Areas of advanced practice include units in advanced communication, management, governance and research; whilst specialisation units include advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound upper body, advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound lower body, advanced obstetric ultrasound, advanced vascular ultrasound, advanced paediatric ultrasound, advanced imaging of congenital heart disease and fetal echocardiography. The advanced communication unit includes issues such as communication in the role as a clinical supervisor, difficult conversations and the skills of report writing. Research involves the presentation of a research report or project plan. Graduates will demonstrate leadership within the health care sector by being effective problem solvers and advanced practitioners. Theoretical content will be provided by flexible learning with opportunities in one unit to attend a practical workshop.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Completion of a bachelor degree with the equivalent to an Australian pass grade average in the final two terms, from a recognised higher education institution. English requirements: IELTS Academic - 6.0 with no individual band score of less than 5.5; TOEFL Internet-based - Overall score of 75 with no score less than 17; Pearson Test of English Academic - Overall score of 54 with no score less than 46; Cambridge English: C1 Advanced , Cambridge English: C2 Proficiency - Overall test score of 169 (with no individual band score of less than 162).

For international students

Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography, or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution, where the medium of instruction is English; or

Graduate Diploma of Echocardiography, or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution, where the medium of instruction is English.
