The MPhil is a 100 per cent research program. A research candidate is required to undertake a program of supervised research within the faculty resulting in the completion of a major thesis, of a maximum of 35,000 words. In fulfilling the requirements for supervised study and research at the university, a candidate is required to be present on campus at Monash University on a regular basis and to be involved in the intellectual life of the university and the Faculty.

Successful completion of the program will signify that the student has successfully completed a course of research training and has satisfied the examiners that they can carry out a research project and critically analyse the results.

It is expected that graduates will be able to demonstrate the following abilities:

critically review the current research in the literature
formulate a research problem of high impact and significance
apply the appropriate research methodology
analyse the research data
articulate the research outcome to a variety of audience.

a coursework and training component.

Entry requirement for international students

An applicant for admission to the MPhil must have:

qualified for a degree of bachelor with a minimum upper H2B (a mark of 65 or above) in an honours year in a relevant field, or its equivalent; or
qualifications which in the opinion of the GRC are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.

IELTS 6.5 overall (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based): 550+ TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet based): 79 + Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 & Writing 21; Pearson Test of Academic English: 58 + communicative score 50; Cambridge English: 176 +
