What will I learn?

Deakin's Master of Professional Accounting covers engaging areas such as corporate and management accounting, commercial law, corporations law, accounting theory, economics, and finance.

Open to graduates from both accounting and non-accounting background, you’ll be given the opportunity to become associate members of CPA Australia or to enter the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand to undertake the CA program.

The accounting profession has recently seen a fundamental shift from a role that was seen as providing financial information and number crunching towards a wide-ranging advisory role. Graduating with a Master of Professional Accounting from Deakin opens the door to a huge variety of business careers. Today’s accountants are now seen as providers of business management information – a role perfectly suited to graduates of this professional accounting course.

Course structure

To complete the Master of Professional Accounting, students must attain a total of 12 credit points, consisting of 8 credit points of core units and 4 credit points of elective units. Most units (think of units as 'subjects') are equal to 1 credit point.

Career outcomes

Graduates of this course would typically seek employment in areas of accounting such as financial accounting, auditing, taxation, management accounting, public sector accounting, forensic accounting or commercial law. However accountants can choose to work in a range of different environments depending on their own skills and preferences. They can choose to work in large firms, small public practices, industry, government, law firms, management consultancies, banking and financial services, not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) or educational organisations. Many also set up their own businesses.

Professional recognition

Completion of the appropriate selection of units within the Master of Professional Accounting grants eligibility for entry as an associate member of CPA Australia, and meets the educational requirements for entry into the CA program of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand(CAANZ), the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), Professional Accounting Program (PEP). Upon completion of appropriate program units, it is also possible to receive exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) towards the ACCA qualification. Completion of this qualification will allow students to enter the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) study program.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a bachelor’s Honors (AQF8) degree in a related discipline OR Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, plus two years relevant work experience OR Graduate Certificate of Applied Artificial Intelligence (or equivalent) OR Evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent. Other English Language Requirements accepted: IELTS: Overall 6.5, no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (PBT) score of 577 Writing 4.5; TOEFL Internet Based: 70 Writing 21; CPE: 176 no band less than 169; CAE: 176 no band less than 169; PTE score of 58 no less than 50 in each skill; OET: Overall B, with A or B in listening, speaking, writing and reading.

For international students

Entry will be based on performance in:

  • a Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7), major or other qualification (at a higher AQF level) in a related discipline, Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60% OR
  • a Bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum WAM of 60, PLUS two years relevant work experience OR
  • successful completion of the Masters Qualifying Program (MQP) or MQP Extended (with a minimum overall average of 60 in the discipline units), PLUS two years relevant work experience
