The Professional Certificate in Workplace Leadership is a high-impact leadership course providing the fundamental skills required for great leaders.

Developed and delivered by the Centre for Workplace Leadership, located with the Faculty of Business and Economics, you will learn from industry leaders and experts and get a jump-start on your personal growth.

Who the course is for

This course is designed for early-to-mid-career professionals working in various sectors from information technology to healthcare, seeking to develop their managerial and leadership skills, as well as senior professional aiming to build their foundational leadership skills to better lead teams. It's suitable for anyone with the ambition to enhance their understanding of leadership, and learn how to empower and encourage team members to optimise their performance.

Course aims

This pioneering course has been devised to help you become a successful leader in your field of expertise by developing your capabilities in communications, decision making, negotiation, problem solving, managing people through delegation and facilitation, and improving workplace functions by creating and maintaining effective systems.

The course aims to provide practical learning opportunities for those seeking to extend their business, managerial and leadership skills. As a student of this program, you will learn the fundamentals of leadership including strategic planning, problem solving, managing people, and influencing others, which can be applied immediately to the workplace.

What you will learn

Students of this program will develop an in-depth understanding of the principles and theories of contemporary leadership. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of what leadership is and why it is important to organisations. You will also learn how to identify the influence leadership has in an organisational context, both positive and negative.

You will learn how to analyse and evaluate various leadership theories, models and approaches and how they impact upon employee and organisational performance. You will gain enhanced skills in giving and receiving feedback to coach and support others to maximise their workplace performance. You will become proficient in key issues related to leadership styles and be able to identify applications of effective workplace leadership. You will also become well-versed in good governance and business ethics.

Drawing on theories and empirical evidence you will devise a plan to overcome a complex personal leadership challenge. Through this process, you will gain insight into your own leadership capabilities and have the capacity to think critically and creatively to solve complex problems. You will also participate in simulations and collaborative leadership tasks which will develop your strategic thinking and analytical skills. This course will highlight the leadership qualities you already possess and how you can enhance them to become a great leader.

Course structure

To gain the Professional Certificate in Workplace Leadership you must complete 25 points comprised of two core subjects - Foundations of Leadership and Leadership in Practice.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants need to successfully complete an undergraduate degree. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English – you need an overall score from a minimum between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50; Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – you need a Cambridge English Score from a minimum 176 with no skill below 169.

For international students

To be considered for entry to the Professional Certificate in Workplace Leadership, applicants must have completed:

An undergraduate degree or equivalent; and
One year of documented relevant post graduation professional experience, which demonstrates the capacity to undertake the course successfully.
