What will I learn?

The Biotechnology program encompasses the broad field of chemical and gene biotechnology. Chemical biotechnology involves the use of the tools and techniques of chemistry to understand and manipulate biological processes. Gene biotechnology involves the use of DNA technology, bioinformatics and microbiological techniques to study biological phenomena. Graduates of these programs work in the areas of pharmaceuticals and related human health activities, food science and nutritional biochemistry, environment, energy, as well as in biotechnological-related issues in finance and policy.

Entry requirements

For international students

To be admitted to a PhD program, a student should hold either an appropriate master’s degree or, students with a bachelor’s degree already registered in a master’s program, may convert to PhD studies in year 2 of some of the master’s programs. Students will normally be expected to have attained an 80% average and have achieved significant research progress as determined by their supervisory committee.

English proficiency requirements

  • IELTS - Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no subtest below 6.0
  • TOEFL - Minimum overall score of 88, with no subtest below 21
  • CAEL - Minimum overall score of 60, with 60 in writing, and no other subtest below 50
  • PTE Academics - Minimum overall score of 60, with no subtest below 60
