There’s a lot of technology at work in today’s commercial and institutional buildings, from energy efficient boilers to complex HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning). Building systems require regular, skilled maintenance-mechanical and technical. That’s why building systems technicians are always in demand. It’s a job that requires good problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Building Systems Technician is a one-year certificate program offered at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina campus. You’ll receive comprehensive training in maintaining, operating and repairing electrical, ventilation, refrigeration and water treatment systems.

Most courses include practical activities to develop your troubleshooting skills. You’ll also get hands-on experience with a boiler during a work experience in your second term. It’s a great way to use what you’ve learned in class and labs in a real-world setting. It’s also a way to develop contacts for possible future employment.

Industry certifications are important to your career mobility and earning power. So, in addition to developing your knowledge and skills, Saskatchewan Polytechnic helps you prepare for industry certification exams. You’ll have an opportunity to write the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety exam at the:

  • Fireman’s Level
  • Refrigeration Operator Level
  • Refrigeration Engineer Level

Your two-week work experience also qualifies you to write the Boiler and Pressure Safety exam at the Fifth Class Power Engineer Level.

Your Career

Building Systems Technician certificate combined with industry certifications will open a lot of different doors. Graduates are working in building systems maintenance and operation in medium to large buildings (apartment blocks, hotels, malls, schools, health facilities, etc.). You could work in boiler and refrigeration plants, perform maintenance crew work or take charge of a building. Potential employers include building owners, property management companies and government agencies.

Entry requirement for international students

  • Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Canada Grade 12.

    English Language Requirements:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Internet based: An overall minimum score of 81 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), with a minimum score of 19 in each of reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • TOEFL – Paper-based: Minimum test score of 550 with a minimum TWE of 3.5 and a minimum TSE of 50
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Academic Module: Overall minimum score of Band 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.0 in each component
  • Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): Minimum score of 4.5 in each of listening and reading, a minimum score of 4.0 in speaking, and a minimum score of 4.0 in writing
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) and CAEL CE: Minimum score of 60 with a minimum score of 50 in each component
  • University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Minimum grade of C
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum score of 85
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTEA) - A minimum score of 63 with minimum component scores of 50
