Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.

Career Opportunities

Students graduating from this program may find employment in construction management, contracting, estimating, sales, government services and consulting.

Entry requirement for international students

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Grade 12 English (C, U)

Grade 12 Math (C, U) (MCT4C preferred; MAP4C is accepted with a minimum GPA of 60%)

Grade 12 Physics (C, U) recommended

Or equivalent

Or mature student status (an applicant who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent, and will have reached the age of 19 years on or before the start of the program). Mature students must undergo academic testing prior to admission into a program.

Proficiency Tests for International applicants for whom English is a second language must demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English by taking the following:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): overall score of 6.0 must be achieved, with no individual Band score under 5.5.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 58+

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 550 paper and 213 computer-based; 79-IBT.
