Individuals may pursue a PhD at the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), University of Alberta, in conjunction with another department on campus (i.e., one that has an established PhD program). Currently, interested individuals must apply as Individual Interdisciplinary PhD students, to the other campus department, with a program proposal that requires co-supervision by a SLIS faculty member. Students admitted to this program in recent years have been jointly supervised by faculty members in Education, Nursing and Psychology. Information about the Individual Interdisciplinary PhD program is available through Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. If you are interested in this program, please speak to potential supervisors at SLIS, and with the Graduate Coordinator, in addition to potential supervisors and the Graduate Coordinator in the other supervisory department.SLIS encourages students to pursue funding in support of their PhD program as part of the application process. Please note that applications may be submitted at any time during the year. As the process for confirming supervisors and completing the paperwork may take a number of months, students are encouraged to begin the process approximately one year prior to their anticipated start date.
