Summary

Description

This one year program is designed to provide paramedics with advanced knowledge and skills for practicing emergency health care and to prepare them to function as a leader in emergency situations. Graduates of the program will have demonstrated the ability to safely and competently care for patients of all ages and administer advanced medical treatment measures. The program is comprised of classroom instruction, skills and patient simulation labs, clinical placement and field placement.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • interact professionally with patients and others, adhering to relevant provincial and federal legislation and codes of conduct;
  • collaborate with a broad range of personnel such as employers, Primary Care Paramedics, Critical Care Paramedics, Communications Officers, firefighters, police officers, physicians, allied health professionals and others;
  • lead an inter-disciplinary team to ensure optimal patient care;
  • provide complete and accurate reports, in compliance with current legislation, regulations, standards and established policies and procedures;
  • analyze patient assessment findings critically, and infer a provisional diagnosis, using relevant theory and practices and complying with current legislation, regulations, standards, best practices and established policies and procedures;
  • evaluate patient condition continuously, anticipating changes and adapting interventions to provide safe and optimal care;
  • justify an intervention plan in accordance with ACP Medical Directives, best practices, evidence-based medicine and clinical findings;
  • perform basic and advanced life support skills safely and competently, including controlled medical acts, in accordance with established standards and Medical Directives;
  • employ preventative and therapeutic interventions, while maintaining safety of self and others, to promote optimal well-being of the patient, in compliance with current legislation, regulations, standards and established policies and procedures;
  • formulate strategies for self-evaluation and for improving proficiency in the practice of paramedicine.

Accreditation

The Paramedic program follows the National Occupational Competency Profile for Paramedics as approved by the Paramedic Association of Canada and is accredited by EQual Accreditation Canada.

Career Opportunities

Graduates who already possess provincial certification at the Emergency Medical Care Assistant (E.M.C.A.) level, will, after successful completion of the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Program, be eligible to write the Ontario ACP certification exam and gain employment as ACPs with ambulance services throughout the province or across Canada.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must hold the following:

  • Two-year Ontario College Paramedic diploma or equivalent
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant (AEMCA) license
  • A minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience within the last five years with a licensed paramedic service demonstrated by providing letter(s) from current or recent employers.
  • Applicant must be currently employed by a licensed paramedic service.
  • Letter of current good standing from the applicant’s base hospital or regulatory body (from out of province applicants).

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to meet Georgian’s language proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (IBT): 89
  • TOEFL Paper-based test: 580
  • IELTS Academic only: 6.5
  • YELT: 1-5
  • TOEIC: 850
  • Graduate of Level 8 of Georgian’s GAAS - English for Academic Purposes: Completion of level 8 with 80% or higher
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): 60
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): 61
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 175
