What will I learn?

This Graduate Diploma invites students with an interest in language and literacy to explore what it means to develop citizens whose personal, economic, and intellectual lives are enhanced by advancing their skills in language and literacy. Course themes include:

  • Oral language in classrooms
  • Language and literacy in contexts
  • Second language and multilingual education
  • Language and literacy as practices
  • Language and literacy for specific groups of learners (e.g., young children, special populations)
  • Modalities and literacy
  • Childrens literature
  • The processes of and teaching of reading and writing

Who can complete this Graduate Diploma? * Graduate students who are currently enrolled in the Graduate Program in Educations MEd or PhD who are interested in completing the Graduate Diploma concurrently

* New part-time students who have been accepted to take the Graduate Diploma as a stand-alone program through the Graduate Program in Education

Options:

Option A – Concurrent: The Graduate Diploma in Language and Literacy Education is offered concurrently with the Master of Education (MEd) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in the Graduate Program in Education. Applicants must be accepted as MEd or PhD graduate students in the Faculty of Educations Graduate Program in Education: Language, Culture and Teaching.

NOTE: When applying to the concurrent option, applicants ONLY need to apply to the MEd or PhD program in Education applicants do not need to submit a separate application for the Diploma.

Option B – Direct-Entry: Students can take a stand-alone, part-time direct entry Graduate Diploma, which is offered only within the Graduate Program in Education and is designed to provide opportunities for graduate level study of theory and research in Language and Literacy Education.

The direct-entry stand-alone diploma option is ONLY available on a part-time basis.

When applying to the direct-entry stand-alone Diploma, please note that application requirements are the same as for the part-time Master of Education (MEd) program.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must hold, at a minimum, an Honours undergraduate degree or equivalent (typically a four-year full-time program) from a recognized post-secondary institution with at least a B (second class) standing in the final two years of full-time equivalent study. As approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Senate, individual graduate programs may have a minimum academic standing requirement greater than B (second class).

Language Test Scores

a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper based)or 100 (internet based);
a minimum IELTS score of 7.5 (Academic Module);
a minimum PTE Academic score of 76;
YUELI Academic Program Level 9 with Distinction;
YUELI Graduate Studies Preparation Program (GSPP) graduate with Distinction;
a CAEL overall score of 70 with no component score less than 60;
a minimum CPE score of B, or;
a minimum CAE score of C2.
