What will I learn?

The UFV Migration and Citizenship graduate diploma program builds on the knowledge acquired in the Migration and Citizenship graduate certificate.

To help you apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom and develop a reflexive and ethical practice, you have the opportunity to complete a practicum with a migration services agency and a capstone project.

Hands-on Practicum:

A practicum will help to prepare you for a career in the broad fields of Migration and Citizenship by providing an opportunity to develop professional experience and skills in the context of a 300-hour field placement. During the practicum, you keep a weekly journal as a record of your experience to help with preparing your capstone project.

Practical are offered by a range of migration service providers and community organizations, and supervisory duties will be shared by the staff of these institutions. If you have prior work experience, portfolio-based Prior Learning and Recognition (PLAR) assessment is available.

Capstone project:

The capstone project enhances your professional development by allowing you to engage in insightful and critical reflection on your practicum. You get to develop and present a personal portfolio (whether in a written, visual, or online format), supported by materials from your practicum and the field at large (i.e. information on programs, policies, events, and activities).

This is an opportunity to examine your personal experiences through the lens of the literature of Migration and Citizenship covered in your coursework.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS:

There is steady demand for settlement professionals to help new immigrants with advocacy, language acquisition, vocational counselling, education, translation, legal assistance, and health services, among other social needs.

Jobs in migration and citizenship exist in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community services, local settlement agencies, immigration consultancies, humanitarian relief organizations, government bodies, and intergovernmental organizations.

Professionals in the field have titles such as settlement practitioner, project officer – multiculturalism, immigration consultant, refugee settlement program coordinator, immigration program coordinator, social policy researcher, development project officer, or social service planner.
