What will I learn?

The MA in Musicology is an integrated program involving music criticism, analysis and applied theory as well as cultural and historical studies.This program is designed for students who desire a deeper interest in music research, including methodologies related to class, race, gender, economics and other social concerns. Faculty offer students close mentoring leading to the development of skills appropriate to an academic career in musicological research.The project option replaces the thesis option with a research project of your choice. While this program’s coursework is similar to the thesis option, the flexibility of the research project supports careers in musicology-related fields, such as music/arts administration, secondary school teaching and performance, arts outreach and interdisciplinary applications combining music with other fields for work in the private sector.OutcomesStudents in this program will develop:refined skills in music research and bibliographyexpertise in contemporary research methodologies, including the role of race, ethnicity, gender, economics, and other social issues in the study of music and the construction of musical narratives and historical practices, reinforcement of musical practices and theories across a variety of genres and historical periods, refined writing skills, especially as pertains to writing about musicrefined abilities in peer-assessment, refined abilities in close-reading, rhetorical analysis and textual criticismrefined presentation abilities (including public speaking and electronic presentation formats)

Entry requirements

For international students

Start by reviewing the graduate school admission requirements; then view the additional requirements for our graduate music programs.Some programs have audition requirements.Applicants are generally expected to have a BMus or BA in Music.Applicants should have at least a B+ (or 6/9) average during the last two years of undergraduate study; all students must meet the University minimum academic requirements.Most of our degrees require two years of resident study, a final project/recital, and an oral examination (see our detailed course requirements).
