Motive Power Technician is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program where students learn advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the heavy duty industry. Courses focus on internal combustion compression ignition engines, power trains, and related modern heavy-duty systems. Graduates of this program will be able to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and undertake responsible work tasks independently.

Dynamic and specialized technicians are always in-demand and the Motive Power Technician (Diesel) program will give you the expertise necessary for a rewarding and satisfying career in the heavy duty service industry; In our diesel mechanic course, you’ll learn everything you need to know about internal combustion compression ignition engines, power trains and related modern heavy duty systems. You’ll also learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and undertake responsible work tasks with minimum supervision throughout your diesel mechanic training; When you graduate, you’ll have the skills necessary to find work with motive power equipment manufacturers, oil companies or industrial, and even work for motive power equipment dealers, You’ll also be well-prepared to enter the workplace in the Truck and Coach apprenticeship, and depending upon Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) policies, may also gain credit for completion of in-school training for this particular apprenticeship; The Motive Power Technician (Diesel) program is designed to develop graduates with essential advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the heavy-duty service industry. You’ll gain progressive and comprehensive learning experiences on internal combustion compression ignition engines, power trains and related modern heavy-duty systems. Students will also learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision; Graduates may also be in a favourable status if they wish to apply for our alternative Motive Power Technician (Automotive) program. Credit for those courses that bridge our diploma programs will be granted; therefore, significantly reducing the requirements for this second Ontario College Diploma. A co-op version of this program is also available.
Diploma to Degree: Fanshawe's Honours Bachelor Degrees have pathways from related diplomas or advanced diplomas, allowing you to graduate with a degree sooner. We have also developed pathways from our Bachelor's degrees to related graduate programs.

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) stream OR Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) OR Pre-Technology Ontario College Certificate OR Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) OR Mature Applicant with appropriate preparation.
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
