Course info

The focus of this PhD program is on the foundations and evolution of the behavior of nonhuman primates and humans. The projects are in the field of psychology, anthropology and biology, and many questions are considered from a comparative perspective. The focus is on the social behavior of non-human primates, group behavior and group coordination, developmental psychology, and the cognitive and physiological basis of behavior. The degree program involves the Faculty of Biology and Psychology and the German Primate Center. Interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange across subject boundaries is an important element of the training program.

The students are integrated into the research activities of one (or two) of the involved working groups with their doctoral projects. Each doctoral candidate is supervised by a three-person Thesis Committee. In the regular research colloquium, the doctoral candidates report on the progress of their own project. It also promotes early participation in conferences and meetings. In addition to the actual research project, participation in method courses and teaching is required. The total number of credits to be earned is 20.

The obligation to participate in BeCog is subject to the presentation of a caring commitment. For this reason, those interested in this course should contact the heads of the participating departments at an early stage and inquire about vacancies and financing options. Unfortunately, BeCog can not provide financing for doctoral projects.
