Jointly offered by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education, this programme enables you to earn both a BA in Chinese language, literature, and culture and a BEd in Chinese language education over five years of study. Following graduation, you will meet the requirements for Chinese language teachers as recommended by the HKSAR government.

What You’ll Study

The curriculum integrates academic and professional studies in language education. You will study Chinese language, literature, and culture in the Faculty of Arts plus core courses in professional education in the Faculty of Education. Get exposure to professional practices, including pedagogical, psychological, and sociological approaches, plus teaching experience in local primary and secondary schools across five years of study.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will earn a BA in Chinese language, literature, and culture, and a BEd in Chinese language education plus recognition equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Career Prospects

The double degree programme paves the way for a wide variety of career options, from teaching to writing to research. Graduates have gone on to teach Chinese language programmes at primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. Others have joined the government in the Education Bureau or the Examinations and Assessment Authority. Alternatively, pursue a career in publishing or textbook writing and editing, language training in the business sector, or research at universities.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants from Hong Kong-based schools must have completed a six-year secondary education before entering HKU, according to government regulations.

IB Diploma:

(a) Grade 4 in HL / SL English Language A: Language and Literature;

(b) Grade 4 in HL / SL English Language A: Literature;

(c) Grade 4 in SL English – Text and Performance;

(d) Grade 4 in SL English – Literature and Performance (A1 syllabus)

(e) Grade 4 in HL English Language (B Syllabus);

(f) Grade 5 in SL English Language (B Syllabus); or

(g) Grade 4 in HL / SL English Language (A1 or A2 Syllabus)

Note:

“Higher Level” is referred to as “HL”, and “Standard Level” as “SL”

GCE A-level, International A-level:

(a) Grade C or better in English Language at GCSE/ GCEO;

(b) Grade C or better in English First Language at IGCSE; or

(c) Grade B or better in English Second Language at IGCSE; or

(d) Grade C or better in English Language or English Literature at GCE AS/ AL

Note: For GCSE/ IGCSE which uses the new 9-1 grading system, Grade 5 will be taken as equivalent to Grade B and Grade 4 will be taken as equivalent to Grade C

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education: Level 3 in English Language

Hong Kong Associate Degree (AD) or Higher Diploma (HD)

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

A score of 93 or better in the TOEFL internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) is required, achieved in the same attempt.
