What will I learn?

This major aims to train students to be professionals in the digital television and broadcasting industry. It puts students on the forefront of broadcasting technology and enables them to learn a broad range of digital media skills and provides them with knowledge on a broad range of concepts, content, forms, trends and technologies. It develops and extends students’ creative potential and nurtures their entrepreneurial expertise in such a way that encourages them to explore, discover and present unique peculiarities of social realities. It prepares graduates to take up the artistic, innovative, technological and management roles in relation to media carried through various channels, including terrestrial airwaves, satellite, cable, CCTV, the Internet, and mobile platforms.

This major trains students to be internationally oriented professionals with the knowledge and integrated skills to succeed in the media and communication sectors, particularly the rapidly expanding digital television and broadcasting industry, the advertising and marketing industry, the telecommunications industry and the content and creative sector of the IT industry. Graduates are well positioned to entering a wide range of careers in these industries.

During their undergraduate studies, students have many opportunities to travel abroad on study trips, student exchanges and overseas internships. Graduates also have a successful record of rapid employment after graduation, entering a wide range of professions and career paths including, media industries, telecommunications, advertising, business and education.

The Department’s teaching and research activities are supported by a state-of-the-art integrated and inter-compatible digital multimedia platform. The facilities include digital TV shooting/editing studios, 3-D Virtual TV/audio recording/advertising shooting/design studios, new media and eye-tracking labs.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have obtained Grade E or above in three GCE A-level (or A2) / International A-level subjects. Two AS subjects are considered to be equivalent to one AL subject. The same subject cannot be counted at both the A Level and AS Level. English Language Requirements : Grade C/Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language or English Literature, or a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test), or an IELTS overall band score of 6.5.

For international students

Applicants are required to have 12 or 13 years of schooling (primary and secondary). To be eligible for consideration for admission, applicants should have attained the minimum grade specified, or where a grade is not specified, an acceptable pass. Entry requirements vary country by country.

Applicants who obtained their entrance qualifications in a language other than English will need an acceptable result in an approved English qualification. The following qualifications are accepted as proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL: Minimum total score of 79 in the Internet-based test
  • IELTS: Overall band score of 6.5 or above
  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations - One of the following: Grade C or above in Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE); Grade C or above in Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
