What will I learn?

The interdisciplinary major in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy is open to outstanding students admitted to the Faculty of Arts who wish to attain a foundational knowledge of traditional Chinese learning and its contemporary interpretation, adaptation or development from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. This includes the study of classic, method of studying, as well as the changing social and academic context of values and idea.

Students are required to complete a year-long Directed Research Project (6 credits). For the DR Project, each student will have one chief supervisor plus a second reader from a different discipline than the chief supervisor. Students can choose to complete their DR projects in either Chinese or English. Students who have completed the 120-credit curriculum incorporating the 48-credit interdisciplinary major will be awarded a BA (Hons) in Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy degree.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the Chinese Literature, History and Philosophy major will be able to:

  • understand Chinese civilization and culture from a variety of disciplinary perspectives;
  • devise and complete an independent, interdisciplinary research project;
  • analyze written texts;
  • construct an argument and support it with appropriate evidence;
  • write eloquently in both Chinese and English.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Grade 4 in one of the following English Language subjects: English A, English B, English Literature and Performance

For international students

One of the following:

  • A degree or a sub-degree awarded by a recognised post-secondary institution
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one year of undergraduate study at a recognised university
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one year of study leading to the qualification of associate degree / higher diploma or its equivalent at a recognised post-secondary institution

Entry requirements vary country by country.

In addition to the General Admission Requirements, applicants are also required to fulfill one of the following English language requirements:

  • International Baccalaureate (IB): Grade 4 in English Language
  • TOEFL: 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based)
  • IELTS: Overall band score of 6.0 in Academic Module
