What will I learn?

The BED&BSC programme integrates academic and professional studies in science education. Study two degrees over five years and to become a teacher of science subjects in secondary schools across Hong Kong. Learn professional knowledge and practise it in practical placements.

PURSUE A CAREER IN SCIENCE EDUCATION

Jointly offered by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science, this five-year degree integrates academic and professional studies in science education. The interdisciplinary programme will equip you to teach science subjects across secondary schools in Hong Kong, including biology, chemistry and physics.

Professional opportunities

Graduates will be awarded two degrees: Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education, including a recognition as equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education qualification.

What You’ll Study

You will complete a science major through the Faculty of Science plus core courses in professional education through the Faculty of Education. A choice of seven science majors includes biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, ecology and biodiversity, food and nutritional science, molecular biology and biotechnology, and physics.

Get exposure to professional practices, including pedagogical, psychological, and sociological courses, plus teaching in local mainstream schools across five years of study.

Test your theories in Hong Kong’s secondary schools through hands-on learning opportunities with local students.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will earn a BSc and a BEd in Science education. The programme is equivalent to a BSc plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education – a professional teaching qualification recognised locally.

Career Prospects

Graduates have gone on to teach science or science-related subjects in mainstream Hong Kong secondary schools. Others have ventured into scientific research in tertiary institutions or government sectors. You can also consider a career in government quality assurance or curriculum development, civil service and administration, or publishing and textbook writing.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education/HKCEE/HKALE or equivalent. English Language Requirement: IELTS - An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module; TOEFL - A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English. IB score will vary according to the program selected.

For international students

Competitive Admission Standards:

  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 33 points out of 45 or equivalent
  • GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 2A 1B level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language or equivalent
  • SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1350; SAT Subject Tests: 600 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

  • Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;
  • Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or
  • Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

  • Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or
  • Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test.
