What will I learn?

Programme Aims

This programme aims to prepare qualified physical education teachers for both primary and secondary schools who:

  • demonstrate academic competence in disciplinary knowledge of humanities and science of human movement appropriate for teaching of PE in Hong Kong secondary and primary schools;
  • apply theories into practice innovatively to serve as professional PE teachers facilitating pupils' informed and active learning in Hong Kong secondary and primary schools;
  • value and understand critical sports-related values and attitudes;
  • demonstrate critical understanding of curricular and pedagogical knowledge and skills appropriate for teaching of PE in Hong Kong secondary and primary schools;
  • master and value a variety of physical activities as well as participate regularly in contributing to healthy and active lifestyles;
  • engage in on-going enrichment in professional and intellectual development concerning PE.

Despite its training at both primary and secondary levels, students of the programme need to focus their study at a particular level during their course of study subject to the quotas of the respective school levels as decided by the University as well as the projected demand of teachers at the two levels.

Major

The curriculum covers a wide range of theory and professional activity courses to enhance student teachers' academic knowledge, skill proficiency and teaching competence in Physical Education. Course content reflects contemporary local and global development in Physical Education which focuses on promoting students' all round development, lifelong learning and healthy and active lifestyles. Various teaching and learning strategies are employed to provide student teachers with opportunities to practise and develop innovative pedagogy and curriculum. With an emphasis on developing adequate skills, knowledge, and attitude for primary/secondary Physical Education teaching, the curriculum also builds a solid foundation in the disciplines of Sports, Humanities, Science, Pedagogy and Curriculum for further studies.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

As stipulated by the Government, Physical Education can only be taught by fully qualified professionals. This has created a huge demand for professionally trained Physical Education teachers in Hong Kong. In addition, graduates of the programme can also choose to become professional coaches, sports management personnel and officers of local disciplinary forces.

Graduates of the programme will become fully qualified teachers of Physical Education for local primary/secondary schools with the following skills and qualifications:

  1. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in Hong Kong;
  2. Good foundation in sports, humanities, science, pedagogy and curriculum disciplines for further studies; and
  3. Degree-level professional qualifications that are in great demand in the Physical Education related professions.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have obtained US High School Graduation Diploma. English Language Requirements: A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 80 (internet-based test); or A minimum overall band of 6 in the academic version of IELTS; or A score of 110 or above in JEE English Language; or Grade E or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English; or Grade C or above in IGCSE/GCE O-level English; or Grade C or above in GCSE English or English Literature. GCE AL / IAL with Grade E or above in 3 AL (or A2) subjects (other than Chinese/Mandarin/English); or Grade E in 2 AL (or A2) plus 2 Advanced Supplementary (AS) subjects (other than Chinese/ Mandarin/English).

For international students

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level / International Advanced Level

  • General English Language Requirements

    The following is a list of acceptable tests and the score required:

  • TOEFL - Paper-based: 550; or Internet-based: 80
  • IELTS Academic - Overall Band: 6
  • GCE System: Grade E or above in GCE AS-level or A-level English; or Grade C or above in IGCSE / GCE O-level English; or Grade C or above in GCSE English or English Literature
  • IB - Grade 4 in the Higher Level English Language (B Syllabus); or Grade 5 in the Standard Level English Language (B Syllabus); or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English Language (A1 or A2 Syllabus); or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English A: Language and Literature; or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English A: Literature; or Grade 4 in the Standard Level English-Literature and Performance; or Grade 4 in the Standard Level English-Text and Performance
  • SAT - A sub-score of 8 in Essay Writing in old SAT; or 590 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing in new SAT
  • Others - Other English language qualifications deemed acceptable by the University.
