What will I learn?

The only Actuarial Science degree in Hong Kong accredited by the UK’s institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

This programme equips you with a solid background and specialist training in actuarial science. You will acquire the confidence and analytical skills to define and tackle problems in actuarial science and related fields. The degree prepares you to sit the early actuarial exams to join the profession with an internationally recognised qualification upon graduation.

What You’ll Study

Offering modern actuarial training, the comprehensive degree is infused with multidisciplinary courses in diverse areas, including probability, statistics, economics, investment, finance, law, taxation, and accounting.

You will learn to evaluate and measure various categories of risk through effective quantitative methods. Over the course of your studies, you will become proficient in formulating and communicating practical business strategies with professionalism and accuracy.

You may also choose to add a major in a science or non-science discipline, provided the course requirements are met.

Exciting Opportunities

Internship Programme and Career Advising Programme are offered to help students seize career opportunities readily. Students will gain insight into the challenging world and daily activities of an actuary while strengthening their technical, analytical and communication skills. Mentorship, company visits, career fair and other professional preparation activities are organised to further students’ learning beyond classrooms.

Professional Recognition

The programme is accredited by the UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) based in the UK and internationally. Graduates will be exempted from various IFoA subjects – provided they achieve the required marks in certain courses – on their journey towards qualifying as an actuary. The degree has also obtained Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) approval from the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), the Society of Actuaries (SOA), and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) in North America.

Career Prospects

Graduates have gone on to work for life, health, property, and casualty insurance companies that rely on the judgment of actuaries to ensure their financial security. Others have found success at actuarial consulting firms, offering their expertise on financial services, risk management, health care financing, pension plans, and asset or liability management.

Other graduates have diversified into reinsurers, auditing firms, investment banks, and management consulting firms including, AIA Group, AXA Asia, HSBC Life, Manulife, Prudential, JP Morgan, Standard Chartered, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley, among many others.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education/HKCEE/HKALE or equivalent. English Language Requirement: IELTS - An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module; TOEFL - A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English.

For international students

Competitive Admission Standards:

  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 37 points out of 45 or equivalent
  • GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 2A 1A level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language or equivalent
  • SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1350; SAT Subject Tests: 600 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

  • Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;
  • Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or
  • Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

  • Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or
  • Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test.
