What will I learn?

Overview

The School of Biomedical Sciences was formed on 1 June 2009 by the amalgamation of the 4 preclinical departments including Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry (Medicine), Pharmacology, and Physiology. We have over 50 academic and teaching staff with excellent track records in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training. Being part of the Faculty of Medicine, the School is strategically positioned to gain strong backing from the clinical departments and a close connection to the teaching hospital. Together with our strong linkage with international research institutions and the local biotechnology cluster, the School is in a position of strength to train students with a broad-based and strong foundation in biomedical sciences for the local, regional and international research, and specialists on health system policy and management.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences Programme is the first bachelor programme offered by the School of Biomedical Sciences, and has admitted its first batch of students in September 2016. On top of being broad-based, multidisciplinary, comprehensive and integrative, this Programme will best illustrate the relevance of biomedical science in the clinical, pharmaceutical and healthcare settings, with the enhancement of globalization and policy components. The curriculum is enriched with a bioethics component and courses co-taught by experts in the field or from other Departments or Schools of the Faculty. Our Programme will also differentiate itself from other local Biomedical Sciences Programme by having the Major Electives arranged into specific Concentration Areas (viz. Biomedical Research, Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, Health Services and Consultation), supplemented by the relevant Experiential Learning activities. Such a unique range of courses is the first of its kind to be included in a biomedical science‐based undergraduate programme in Hong Kong which offers a range of options to students who are interested in research, health policy and pharmaceutical manufacturing management, and healthcare services.

Programme Highlights

  • Integrative curriculum: Multidisciplinary and holistic experience

  • Student-centered: three Concentration Areas which allow for students’ choice
  • Practical: Experiential Learning (EL) as a mandatory requirement of each Concentration Area, broadening and enriching students’ learning experiences
  • Entrepreneurship component: to foster collaboration, entrepreneurial mindset, and to raise the awareness on the importance of accessing feasibility of ideas and translating problems into opportunities
  • E-Learning: flipped classroom and other e-learning strategies will be adopted to enrich students’ learning experiences and to foster active, life-long learners.
