BECOME A PROFESSIONAL SPEECH THERAPIST

This five-year, honours programme furnishes you with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to emerge as a scientific, effective, and adaptive speech therapist. The programme prioritises integration and the application of knowledge and scientific evidence in clinical practice.

What You’ll Study

Over four years of study, you will cover the acquisition and development of human communication disorders, speech and language challenges, and swallowing difficulties. The integrated curriculum encompasses knowledge of medical science, psychology, English and Cantonese linguistics, and hearing sciences. Learn through interactions in lectures and clinical practice as well as self-directed, case-based, and small group learning opportunities.

Spend more than 300 hours in clinical practice under the guidance and supervision of University staff and practising clinicians from the community.

During your fifth and final year, you will be required to complete a research project to earn your degree.

Professional Recognition

The programme is fully endorsed by the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists. Following graduation, you will be eligible to register as a speech therapist with the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists and practise in Hong Kong. Graduates have also gone on to pursue postgraduate studies in speech, language, and communication sciences and pathology or similar disciplines.

Career Prospects

Speech therapists assess and treat individuals with a wide range of speech, language, and swallowing disorders and other communication challenges. You will work with people of all ages in a diverse range of settings, from NGOs, private clinics, and pre-school centres to hospitals, schools, and government. There is a high demand for qualified speech therapists in Hong Kong. Graduates have also gone on to secure jobs in Macau, Singapore, and further abroad.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education/HKCEE/HKALE or equivalent. English Language Requirement: IELTS - An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module; TOEFL - A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English.

For international students

Competitive Admission Standards:

  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 36 points out of 45 or equivalent
  • GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 3A level subjects
  • SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1380; SAT Subject Tests: 600 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

  • Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;
  • Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or
  • Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

  • Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or
  • Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or an overall score of 70 in the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test.
