What will I learn?

Programme Aims and Objectives

The EdD programme is aimed at experienced educators and professionals in education settings who aspire to extend their expertise in a particular Specialized Area, and their professional knowledge in a broad range of educational contexts through core courses.

Upon the completion of the Programme, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an expert knowledge, understanding and competence in the Specialized Area and in the larger educational context;
  • generate appropriate theoretical frameworks to address, analyse and propose innovative approaches to a broad range of educational issues;
  • develop insights into research trends in the Specialized Area and demonstrate readiness to contribute to the professional literature in that field;
  • effectively communicate concepts and theories within the Specialized Area to an audience of peers both locally and internationally;
  • analyse educational policies, processes or practices from different perspectives critically; and
  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of ethical practices within the Specialized Area.

International and Comparative Education

This specialization features:

  • The opportunity to study at an advanced level across a wide range of issues, concepts and perspectives in the fields of international education, comparative education, and educational development;
  • A focus on understanding international education, in its prevalent manifestations, and educational and social change and development, from the associated sociological, philosophical, historical, economic and political perspectives;
  • A team of professors who are acknowledged globally as leaders in the field, and as excellent teachers;
  • Hong Kong’s geographical, economic, political and socio-cultural location, which offers an ideal site in and from which to study international education, and educational and social change and development, under conditions of increasing globalization;
  • A commitment to educating for a sustainable future and to social justice in education and society as a key rationale for study in this specialisation.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a master degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or a Bachelor degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university. English Language Requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no subtest lower than 6.0; or TOEFL 550 (paper-based test) or 80 (internet-based test); or Other equivalent qualifications.

For international students

Applicants should normally hold a Master’s degree in the discipline of education or a cognate field relevant to their chosen Specialized Area, plus four years’ professional experience. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a high standard of competence in spoken and written English. Applicants with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a university where the programme was not taught and assessed in English are normally required to demonstrate competency through one of the following minimum English language requirements:

  • IELTS 6.5 with no subtest lower than 6.0; or
  • a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 80 (internet-based test) ; or
  • other equivalent qualifications.
