Doctor of Education (EdD)




What will I learn?

The Doctor of Education programme is offered for experienced professionals who are leaders, or aspire to be leaders, in education-related institutions and services.

Programme features:

  • a professional doctorate consisting of well-structured and integrated coursework and research components that can be used to support high levels of understanding and investigation of issues relevant to the practice of education
  • a wide variety of courses for equipping candidates with research skills and knowledge in their particular specialism. EdD candidates will be given a high degree of flexibility to select the courses that are most appropriate for their research studies
  • quality supervision is provided throughout the whole period of candidature
  • a series of research seminars and workshops given by in-house specialists and international scholars will run throughout the study period to inform and support candidates’ studies
  • an Office of Research supports and coordinates the administration of all matters relating to research postgraduate studies and a coherent programme of research methodology support and research seminars/workshops

Our EdD programme is distinctive with its strong research focus and coursework component tailored to the needs and interests of participants and their work places. The coursework component is fully articulated with the research component.

It aims:

  • to develop participants' capacity for inquiry and evidence-led decision-making and their ability to translate research findings into usable knowledge and
  • to enhance the capacity of educational practitioners to model and transmit best professional practices to others.

Areas of Study

The Faculty has more than 100 full-time academic staff members drawn from various parts of the world. In addition to performing teaching duties, academic staff are engaged in an extensive range of research which provides a focus for supervision of research degrees. Members of the Faculty lead both local and international projects. Many of them sit on different advisory committees contributing to the formulation of policies related to education in Hong Kong.

The major research areas in the Faculty are derived from its Academic Units:

  • Social Contexts and Policies of Education
  • Human Communication, Development, and Information Sciences

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree with a major other than common law with at least second-class honours, or an equivalent qualification. Applicants who do not have a Bachelor degree with English as the medium of instruction are required to satisfy the English language proficiency on the basis of one of the following recognised English tests: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - A score of 100 or above (internet-based test); or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - An overall band score of 7.5 or above with no sub-test below 6.5 and a minimum band score of 7.0 in the academic writing module; In each case, for admissions purposes, the test score report is regarded as valid for two years.

For international students

Applicants should

  • hold a Bachelor's degree with second class honours and a taught Master's degree; or a Bachelor's degree with first class honours; and
  • demonstrate a record of at least 4 years of professional experience in an educational institution or services in the education sector or other relevant sectors as judged appropriate by the Faculty.

In addition to satisfying the requirements for admission to the curriculum concerned, an applicant who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain one of the following examination result.

A. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
1. a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL; or
2. a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL; or
3. a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or

B. IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5; or

C. GCE (General Certificate of Education)
Grade C or above; or

D. IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education)
Grade C or above; or

E. Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language
Grade C or above

Application Deadline (For September 2021 intake): 12:00 noon, February 18, 2021 (Thursday).
