What will I learn?

Programme Aims

This programme aims to develop students to achieve research competency by exposing them to the advanced research skills and facilitating them to conduct an independent research based on the knowledge of current developments in the area of “Environmental Science, Energy and Built Environment”.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to identify problems, and apply original, independent and critical thinking to develop theoretical concepts based on the knowledge of recent advances in the area of “Environmental Science, Energy and Built Environment”.

2. Identify and access appropriate data sources, archives, and other relevant information.

3. Present findings clearly in an appropriate style and justify one’s own research with coherent arguments and articulation of ideas.

4. be creative, innovative and original in one's approach to research, and demonstrate self-discipline, motivation, initiatives and independence.

5. Develop and maintain co-operative working relationships with co-researchers and other related people.

6. Demonstrate an insight into the transferable nature of research skills to other work environments and the range of career opportunities within and outside academia.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants for admission to Doctor of Philosophy must: be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD candidature; or hold a higher degree by research (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or hold a taught Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or hold a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing (IELTS); or Other equivalent qualifications.

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:

  • be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD candidature; or
  • hold a higher degree by research (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.

  • a minimum total score of 550 (paper-based test); or 79 (internet-based); or 59 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores) in TOEFL; or
  • a minimum IELTS score of 6.5; or
  • other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or 59 (revised paper-delivered test); or
  • a minimum score of 490 in the Chinese mainland’s College English Test Band 6 may be accepted.
