Summary

The Chinese Studies PhD programme in the Centre for China Studies is devoted to advanced research training in the interdisciplinary study of Chinese history, literature, religion, culture and society. The programmes are conducted in English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a multilingual community uniquely committed since its establishment to the study of Chinese culture in an environment of academic freedom.

The PhD programme offer students:

  • A devoted group of faculty advisers, encompassing one of the largest, most diverse collection of China scholars in the world;
  • A multilingual Chinese community at a university uniquely committed to the study of Chinese culture;
  • A university library system offering the best resources for Chinese scholarship in the world;
  • A world-class Chinese art collection housed on campus;
  • Proximity to major libraries, archives, and sites for field research in greater China; and
  • Generous graduate fellowships.

The PhD student is required to complete a minimum of 27 units of courses, including

  • Two required courses (a total of 6 units).
  • Three elective seminars or courses offered by related programmes and departments (a total of 9 units).
  • A Thesis Guidance course every term from the beginning of the second year of study (for students admitted with a research master’s degree) or the third year of study (for students admitted without a research master’s degree) until the doctoral thesis is finally submitted (a total of 12 units).

Students must pass the qualifying examination.

  • Students are required to complete a PhD thesis, which should make substantial contribution to scholarship in the chosen field of specialization, and to pass an oral defense of the thesis. English should be used in both the thesis and the oral defense.
  • At the completion of their programme students will be required to demonstrate ability to read Chinese articles in academic journals in the appropriate field of specialization.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • a Master's degree from a recognized university; or
  • a Bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honors in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a Master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
