What will I learn?

This programme will provide advanced research and clinical training to master-level clinical psychologists to raise their standards of professional practice and academic/research competence. The aim of the programme is to train future leaders in the clinical psychology profession, preparing graduates of this programme for senior posts in either tertiary educational institutions or practice settings. In other words, these doctoral graduates are expected in the future to play the roles of resourceful teachers of psychology who nurture young budding psychologists, pioneering researchers who expand the frontier of knowledge, or senior practitioners who monitor and raise the level of professional practices.

Graduate students of this programme have been employed as clinical psychologists in

  • Department of Health,
  • Hospital Authority,
  • Correctional Services Department,
  • Hong Kong Police,
  • Social Welfare Department, and
  • other non-government organizations.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a Master's degree holder from a recognized university; or graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, all applicants should:

  • possess a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology; and
  • have eligibility for membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology, Hong Kong Psychological Society.
  • Knowledge of spoken Cantonese and written Chinese is required (Courses are taught in Cantonese and English).
  • All applicants should also submit a thesis proposal in English (2,500 words or above).

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
