Programme Aims

This programme aims to train and produce independent researchers with state-of-the-art expertise who can create original knowledge through innovative research.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. Formulate and construct effective, innovative, and original solutions to fundamental problems in their chosen subject areas

2. Demonstrate general intellectual proficiency and specialization in their chosen subject areas

3. Apply appropriate research methods and tools to the creation of independent research

4. Discuss the research process and analyse research findings through communications within the learned community

5. Create new knowledge through in-depth investigations of the chosen subject area

Full Time (Students who already hold a master’s degree normally take 3 years / 4 years; and students with a bachelor’s degree but without a master’s degree usually take 4 years.)

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:

  • be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD candidature; or
  • hold a higher degree by research (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.

  • a minimum total score of 550 (paper-based test); or 79 (internet-based); or 59 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores) in TOEFL; or
  • a minimum IELTS score of 6.5; or
  • other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or 59 (revised paper-delivered test).
