What will I learn?

Programme Aims

This programme aims to prepare students for careers as faculty members in major universities and as specialists in a research-related capacity in business and industry. The programme will empower the students with the latest domain knowledge, scientific research methods, and strong capability of conducting research independently. The graduates of the programme will be able to make substantial original contributions to knowledge in management sciences and conduct effective teaching in the context of tertiary education.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories in a chosen field within the domain of management sciences;

2. critically appraise and effectively synthesise relevant research literature;

3. independently formulate research problems, select and apply appropriate research methodologies in the resolution of such problems;

4. make a substantial original contribution to knowledge through independent research, with demonstrated ability to publish scholarly research in reputable journals;

5. effectively communicate research findings and their implications orally and in writing to academic and professional audiences;

6. show awareness of ethical issues involved in research; and

7. demonstrate some teaching ability in the context of tertiary education.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the following entry requirements: a bachelor's degree in a non-law discipline; or a bachelor's degree in law from a non-common law jurisdiction, which was obtainable after at least eight semesters of full-time study. Holders with a degree in law from a common law jurisdiction are NOT eligible to apply. For applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English, the minimum English language proficiency requirement will be: a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based); or an overall band score of 7 in IELTS, with no individual score below 6.5; or a total score of 520 in the Chinese mainland's College English Test (Band 6).

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:

  • be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD candidature; or
  • hold a higher degree by research (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.

  • a minimum total score of 563 (paper-based test); or 85 (internet-based); or 62 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores) in TOEFL; or
  • a minimum IELTS score of 6.5; or
  • other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to TOEFL 563 (paper-based test); or 85 (internet-based test); or 62 (revised paper-delivered test)).

(A high score in GRE or GMAT with supporting proof will be an added advantage, although this is not mandatory. Please note that individual Departments in the College may adopt higher standards.)
