Programme Aims

This programme aims to train and produce independent researchers with state-of-the-art expertise who can create original knowledge through innovative research.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. achieve general intellectual proficiency and specialization in their chosen subject areas;

2. apply appropriate research methodology/tools to conduct independent research for discoveries;

3. formulate and derive effective, innovative and original solutions to fundamental problems in their chosen subject areas for discoveries;

4. communicate effectively with the learned community about the research process and findings for discoveries;

5. discover through in-depth investigation of the chosen subject areas;

6. build up ethical and social responsibilities;

7. perform multi-disciplinary research with new ideas;

8. strengthen independent learning and researching abilities to suit future versatile employment requirements;

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the following entry requirements: a bachelor's degree in a non-law discipline; or a bachelor's degree in law from a non-common law jurisdiction, which was obtainable after at least eight semesters of full-time study. Holders with a degree in law from a common law jurisdiction are NOT eligible to apply. For applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English, the minimum English language proficiency requirement will be: a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based); or an overall band score of 7 in IELTS, with no individual score below 6.5; or a total score of 520 in the Chinese mainland's College English Test (Band 6).

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:

  • be a current MPhil student in the University who seeks transfer to PhD candidature; or
  • hold a higher degree by research (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university; or
  • hold a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.

  • a minimum total score of 550 (paper-based test); or 79 (internet-based); or 59 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores) in TOEFL; or
  • a minimum IELTS score of 6.5; or
  • other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or 59 (revised paper-delivered test); or
  • a minimum score of 490 in the Chinese mainland’s College English Test Band 6 may be accepted.

(Please note that individual Departments in the College may adopt a higher standard.)
