What will I learn?

This programme is research-oriented. A student is required to:

  • Complete an approved programme of supervised research;
  • Present a written thesis which demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge and understanding in the candidate’s field of study and which describes and summarizes the research undertakings and findings;
  • Satisfy the Board of Examiners in an oral examination (and any other examination if deemed necessary), on matters relevant to the subject of the thesis; and
  • Comply with supervision, attendance and all coursework requirements as laid down by the respective Faculty/ School/AVA.

Image Sciences: Image Processing, Inverse Problems, Compressive sensing, Inverse scattering and Super-resolution, Data Analysis, and Applications in computational photography, medical imaging and astronomical imaging.

Optimization: Nonlinear programming, Variation inequalities, Complementarity problems, Large-scale convex problems, Neuro dynamic optimization, Non convex optimization, and Graph Theory.

Statistics: Applied probability, Stochastic geometry, Random processes, Big data, Biostatistics and bioinformatics, clinical trial design, statistical genomics, Finance, Credit risk modelling, Financial econometrics, Financial risk management, High dimensional data analysis, Regression, Spatial statistics, Resampling techniques, and Survival analysis.

Scientific Computing: Finite element methods, Spectral methods, Mesh less methods, Domain decomposition methods, Grid generation, parallel computing, Numerical partial differential equations, Numerical simulations and Mate materials.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess: a master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or a bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose. English Language Requirements: a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550(PBT)/79(IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess:

  1. a master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
  2. a bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
  3. any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose.

Candidates under paragraph (2) should have evidence of research achievement/experience. They may be admitted to the MPhil programme initially, but with a view to proceeding to the PhD programme after satisfactorily passing an assessment at the time of candidature confirmation.

Candidates under paragraph (3) may be required to take a qualifying examination. Their progress shall be reported to the Graduate School at the end of their first year of study.

An applicant seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550(PBT)/79(IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.
