What will I learn?

This programme is research-oriented. A student is required to:

Complete an approved programme of supervised research;
Present a written thesis which demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge and understanding in the candidate’s field of study and which describes and summarizes the research undertakings and findings;
Satisfy the Board of Examiners in an oral examination (and any other examination if deemed necessary), on matters relevant to the subject of the thesis; and
Comply with supervision, attendance and all coursework requirements as laid down by the respective Faculty/ School/AVA.

Sociology (SOC)

This programme focuses on the following research areas: Aging studies, Chinese Societies, including Hong Kong Society and Culture; Comparative asian studies; Cultural Sociology; Gender Studies and sexualities; Globalization and Development Studies; Health and Illness; Inequalities and Social Stratification; Marriage and the Family; Migration; Social Movements; Social Networks; Urban Sociology; Work and Industry; Youth studies.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess: a master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or a bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose. English Language Requirements: a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550(PBT)/79(IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess:

a master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
a bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose.

Candidates under paragraph (2) should have evidence of research achievement/experience. They may be admitted to the MPhil programme initially, but with a view to proceeding to the PhD programme after satisfactorily passing an assessment at the time of candidature confirmation.

Candidates under paragraph (3) may be required to take a qualifying examination. Their progress shall be reported to the Graduate School at the end of their first year of study.

An applicant seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550(PBT)/79(IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.
