What will I learn?

The HKU-UCL Dual Degree Programme in Law was jointly launched by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and University College London (UCL) in September 2016. This unique Programme enables selected students to study in two of the world’s key global financial centres, London and Hong Kong, and to gain insight into the legal systems of two important common law jurisdictions – one as the origin of the common law with easy access to Europe, and the other in an important hub of legal education in Asia that benefits from the rapidly growing economy of China. Students will spend the first two years at UCL and the following two years at HKU. It provides a unique experience to live in two different cultures and offers a wide diversity of opportunities. Upon graduation, they would be eligible to pursue further professional qualifications that would eventually enable them to qualify as legal practitioners in both jurisdictions.

During their time at UCL, students will take a compulsory extra-curricular placement in the UCL Centre for Access to Justice where they will have the opportunity to interact with legal professionals in providing legal assistance to the local community. During the last two years of study at HKU, students may have an opportunity to study a course on an intensive basis in an eminent university in Mainland China, and broaden their horizons by participating in a legal internship through designated clinical courses offered by the Faculty. Upon successful completion of the whole programme, separate Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees will be awarded by these two prestigious and highly-ranked law schools.

Programme Structure

The curriculum for the dual degree programme in law normally requires 4-Year full-time study. Students under this dual degree Programme will spend the first two years at UCL and the following two years at HKU. After completing all four years of study, students will be awarded the HKU LLB and UCL LLB degrees.

To complete the curriculum, a student need to satisfy curriculum requirements for the first two years of study of LLB at UCL, which is equivalent to 132 HKU credits in value, and pass in courses totalling at least 168 credits in value in the last two years of study at HKU. The sequence of the programme of study is as follows:

Study at UCL (equivalent to 132 HKU credits)

The first two years of study are the same as for the three-year LLB degree at UCL: four compulsory modules are studied in each year.

Study at HKU (168 credits with 84 credits per year)

The last two years of study are mainly to complete professional requirements for the award of an LLB degree at HKU.
