About the Programme

The MA in English (Applied English Linguistics) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is an intensive one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) taught postgraduate programme. We offer a wide range of applied linguistics courses which enable students to use their knowledge about linguistics to achieve some purpose or solve some problems in the real world. By the completion of the programme, students will have explored in detail the essential areas of enquiry in applied linguistics and will be able to apply such knowledge to real language use. With a higher level of critical thinking skills and the professional knowledge of applied linguistics, our graduates will get a better chance to advance in education, business and mass media sectors. Our graduates’ ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English also becomes their invaluable assets in the overall competitive job market.

Teaching Focus

This programme is designed with the emphases on:

  • the role of language in human affairs;
  • language cognition and brain research;
  • language, culture, socialization and pragmatics;
  • language and technology;
  • second language acquisition;
  • second and foreign language pedagogy; and
  • English language teaching and learning in the context of the pan-Asian region (e.g. Hong Kong, mainland China).

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

For international students

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  1. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honors not lower than Second Class; or
  2. graduated from an honors programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or
  3. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honors degree.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

  • TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
  • GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
