The programme aims to cultivate in students a deeper knowledge of Chinese culture and broaden their vision with new perspectives to prepare them in meeting the challenges of the changing society. It enhances students’ Chinese language skills and cultural literacy, which are particularly essential for professions such as education, media and cultural management.
Students are required to take 27 units of course work including the Project Report of 3 units. All requirements are normally completed in two years (part-time) or one year (full-time).
Requirements of the programme are as follows:
The courses are classified into three areas: (1) Literature, (2) Language and (3) Culture. Students have to take at least ONE course in each area and choose ONE area to specialise in. They are required to take ONE more course and write a Project Report in their specialised area. It must be noted that the courses offered in each academic year are subject to change.
To provide MA students with greater flexibility, some of the 4000-level BA CHI courses are being double-listed as 7000-level courses so that they can select these courses to fulfill the programme requirements. MA students taking these courses are required to submit a substantially written essay in lieu of participating in the final examination designed for undergraduate students.
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (either in Putonghua or Cantonese). It will be clearly indicated in the registration period.
