What will I learn?

The Research Theme embraces an orientation towards health, focuses on the populations at risk of ill-health, and engage in research aiming at health promotion for all in the context of family, school, workplace, and community.

This team focuses on identification of health risks and early preventive interventions for all populations: children, adolescents, parents, and partners in the context of family, school, and workplace. Research foci are based on the Social-ecological Model for prevention: encompasses individuals, interpersonal / partner / parental / family relationships, school and work environments, community and societal health.

Child and Adolescent Health

This programme of research is dedicated to promoting health, mental wellbeing, and healthy behaviours for children and adolescents in the family, school and community settings. Programmes are developed and implemented to promote healthy lifestyle and mental health among children for their healthy growth and development.

Family Health

This work focuses on studies of health of women as mothers, men as fathers, parenting transitions and experience, families as the source of social support, partner support, and sense of coherence in the families. Programmes are developed to strengthen the family members' sense of belongings, source of support, parenting, and ability to cope with illness in the family as partners.

Community Health

This work aims to develop, and disseminate knowledge and information relating to health threats to the community (i.e. disaster risk, infection control, work hazards) that is globally connected and locally/nationally /regionally relevant. Studies are developed and implemented to evaluate strategies that protect and strengthen resilience at personal and community levels.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an institution that is recognized by PolyU. In addition, you must meet the entrance requirements that are specified by individual programmes. PolyU may accept equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet based test or 550 for the paper-based test; OR An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For international students

At least hold a Bachelor’s degree with Second Class Honors or above (or equivalent qualification) conferred by a recognized university.

PolyU may accept other equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis.

English Language Requirements

The requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognized university are:

An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR

A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test or 550 or above for the paper-based test.

All English language test scores are considered valid for two years after the date of the test.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
