What will I learn?

This programme is research-oriented. A student is required to:

  • Complete an approved programme of supervised research;
  • Present a written thesis which demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge and understanding in the candidate’s field of study and which describes and summarizes the research undertakings and findings;
  • Satisfy the Board of Examiners in an oral examination (and any other examination if deemed necessary), on matters relevant to the subject of the thesis; and
  • Comply with supervision, attendance and all coursework requirements as laid down by the respective Faculty/ School/AVA.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should normally hold a Bachelor's degree for admission to a Taught Postgraduate degree programme; English Language Requirements: TOEFL - 550 (Paper-based), 79 (Internet-based); or IELTS (Academic): Overall Band at 6.5; or CET-6 (College English Test band 6): 450.

For international students

Applicants seeking admission to the MPhil degree programme should possess:

  1. a bachelor’s degree with honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
  2. a qualification deemed to be equivalent; and shall, if required, satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination.

Normally, only first and second class honours graduates will be considered to have met the admissions criterion under paragraph (1). Graduates with third class honours degrees, with a period of relevant work experience and satisfactory results in the qualifying examination may also be considered.

An applicant seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550(PBT)/79(IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.
