Summary

Programme Aims

This programme aims to nurture people who can:

1. contribute to the advancement of knowledge through independent and original research in law;

2. demonstrate specialist subject knowledge and a high level of transferable skills, including analytical, communication and leadership skills;

3. discover the knowledge and understanding of law in the particular areas of research;

4. develop scholarship in the areas of law that are relevant to the contemporary society with a view to understanding their present state as well as their future directions; and

5. make a significant contribution to the particular fields of research.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate a critical understanding of law in their own fields and demonstrate an ability to analyse information and practice in their own fields of research;

2. critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise the main theories, principles, and concepts in their own fields of research;

3. demonstrate creativity in contributing to the knowledge of law by the formulation of research questions and the selection, development and implementation of appropriate research strategies; and

4. create, deploy and defend an argument in writing and orally.

Entry requirement for international students

Applicants seeking admission to a research degree programme should satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements:

  • hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.

  • a minimum total score of 580 (paper-based test); or 92 (Internet-based); or 66 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores) in TOEFL; or
  • a minimum overall band score of 7 in IELTS; or
  • a score of 520 in the Chinese mainland’s College English Test Band 6.

(Take note that the School has stipulated a validity period of three years for results of the above tests. Thus, only test results obtained within three years immediately preceding an application to the School of Law, will therefore be considered valid.)
