What will I learn?

The programme of research is designed in such a way to enable the student to acquire competence in research methods and scholarship and to display sustained independent effort and independent original thought.

The degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) shall be awarded to a student who, on completion of an approved programme of study and research and on fulfilling the coursework requirements for graduation, presents a thesis embodying the results of his/her research and satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (and other examinations if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

MPhil students are required to satisfactorily investigate or evaluate a chosen area, to show understanding of the context and significance of the work, and to present a clear, complete thesis of a quality worthy of publication.

The MPhil degree is awarded to a student who completes all stipulated coursework requirements, presents a thesis embodying the results of their research and satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (and other examinations if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

Textile and Apparel Materials and Products

The Institute of Textiles and Clothing offers research degree programme leading to the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil). The primary objective of the MPhil programme is to educate students at the Master's degree level with a view to preparing them for PhD studies in the near future.

Advanced flexible, soft and fibrous materials and structures: multi-scaled computational modeling and design, synthesis, characterisation; their applications in healthcare and biomedicine, personal protection, interactions between human and environment as well as between human and man-made devices/machines; multi-functional intelligent textiles and apparel technology; flexible bio-opto-electronic devices and wearable systems; sensory engineering, sustainable development of textile processing technologies, three dimensional and complex textile structures; textile physics and structure mechanics; technical textiles; biomedical textiles; shape memory polymers and textiles; nano-science and technology for textiles.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To register for the degree of MPhil, a student shall hold: A Bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University or a recognized university; or other academic qualifications which are deemed to be equivalent. PolyU may accept other equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis. The requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognized university are: An overall score of at least 6.5 (with score for the writing component at 6.0 or above) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above) or 550 or above for the paper-based test (with a score of 4 or above in the Test of Written English). Alternatively, consideration will be given to acceptable scores in other internationally recognized public examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). All English language test scores are considered valid for five years after the date of the test.

For international students

To register for the degree of MPhil, a student must hold:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours from a recognised university; OR
  • Other academic qualifications which are deemed to be equivalent.
