Master of Science in Applied Accounting and Finance (MScAAF)

Hongkong

What will I learn?

This is a master's degree programme in Hong Kong that integrates applied knowledge and skills in accounting and finance to train professionals who will be at home in both fields. The programme emphasizes real, practical international cases. Students acquire an in-depth understanding of and updated knowledge in both accounting and finance. This makes the programme suitable not only for accounting and finance professionals, but also for managers and executives in other business areas.

Programme Theme

Enhance and Broaden Knowledge in Professional Accountancy and Finance

Programme Objectives

  • To enhance students’ understanding of the state-of-the-art knowledge in accounting and finance;
  • To develop students’ analytical, judgmental, and conceptual minds;
  • To equip students with the solid accounting and finance knowledge and practical skills needed for managing their organizations;
  • To prepare students to advance further in their professional careers, or to continue their studies in the relevant fields, and
  • To facilitate students to prepare for relevant professional qualification examinations.

Programme Learning Goals (LGs)

  • LG1: Students will be able to integrate contemporary accounting knowledge and skills to solve real-life accounting issues.
  • LG2: Students will be able to apply contemporary finance theories and skills to tackle financial matters.
  • LG3: Students will be able to critically analyse different accounting and finance cases according to rational decision making procedures.
  • LG4: Students will be able to explain the key issues relating to the ethical and professional responsibilities of the accounting and finance profession under a changing environment.

Teaching Mode and Duration

The MScAAF curriculum itself is flexible in providing students with the options of completing the programme in 1 year full-time mode (3 trimesters, 2 to 4 courses in each trimester) or 2 years part-time mode (5-6 trimesters, 1-2 courses in each trimester). The required courses for both part-time and full-time modes are identical.

Classes are held at HKBU Kowloon Tong campus on weekday evenings and/or weekend afternoons. Full-time classes may also be held during daytime on weekdays. However, while every effort will be done to keep this arrangement, it is subject to change due to some exceptional circumstances.

Programme Structure

Students are required to take 11 courses. There are 8 core courses, 2 courses and 1 non-unit bearing course (a total of 30 units) to be offered by either department (details of the potential courses to be offered are given here). Hence students can opt for concentrating more on either accounting or finance electives in light of their academic and working background and their needs for obtaining more knowledge and training in accounting or finance field. (The list of the electives may be expanded later as the programme develops and more resources become available). Under special circumstances, students may take a guided independent study or an integrated project concentrating on the application of both accounting and finance knowledge as the alternative for only one elective course if approval in advance is granted.
