Programme Aims

The programme is designed

to provide advanced education and training for students who seek to upgrade their knowledge and pursue high-level careers in the area of aviation and aeronautical engineering;
to enable students to develop the competence needed to become more competitive in the job market and ultimately take leading roles in the aviation industry;
to nurture students’ understanding and mastery of the most up-to-date advanced technologies in the area of aviation and aeronautical engineering; and
to enable students to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to solve problems encountered in practice.

Characteristics

The programme allows students to take subjects in various related fields, such as Air Traffic Control, Flight Mechanics, Aircraft Design, and Avionics. Students can also take certain combinations of subjects that lead to an award with specialisation. The unique opportunities offered by the programme help students to develop into highly competent and competitive professionals in the field of aviation and aeronautical engineering.

The mixed mode of study allows students to learn either full time or part time. Local students can vary their study mode from semester to semester according to their personal preferences. This flexibility is not available to non-local students, who are constrained by visa requirements.

The online mode of study is designed for non-local students. In this mode, all teaching activities, including assessment, are conducted online. Students who opt for the online mode are registered as part-time students. No student visas are arranged by the University for 100% online students. They are also not eligible to apply for a visa/an entry permit after graduation under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) of the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Recognition & Prospects

Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary to excel in high-level careers in aviation and aeronautical engineering and many other related areas.

Programme Structure

Students can also take specific combinations of subjects to graduate with a specialisation award, as follows:

For the MSc in Aviation Engineering

Students must complete:

7 taught subjects, including at least 4 AAE Core Subjects, and a Dissertation; OR
10 taught subjects, including at least 6 AAE Core Subjects

For the MSc in Aviation Engineering (Aviation Operations and Management)

Students must complete:

7 taught subjects, including at least 4 AAE Core Subjects in the Aviation Operations and Management specialism, and a Dissertation; OR
10 taught subjects, including at least 6 AAE Core Subjects in the Aviation Operations and Management specialism

For the MSc in Aviation Engineering (Aeronautical Engineering)

Students must complete:

7 taught subjects, including at least 4 AAE Core Subjects in the Aeronautical Engineering specialism, and a Dissertation; OR
10 taught subjects, including at least 6 AAE Core Subjects in the Aeronautical Engineering specialism

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an institution that is recognized by PolyU. In addition, you must meet the entrance requirements that are specified by individual programmes. PolyU may accept equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet based test or 550 for the paper-based test; OR An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For international students

A Bachelor’s degree with honours in an engineering, science, or technology related subject or qualifications that satisfy the academic requirements for Corporate Membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), or the equivalent.

Consideration is also given to candidates without honours degrees who have other relevant qualifications and/or appropriate work experience.

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the following minimum English language requirement for admission purpose, unless otherwise specified by individual programmes concerned:

A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet-based test or 550 for the paper-based test; OR

An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
