What will I learn?

Programme Aims

The programme aims to broaden and deepen students' knowledge in the construction and real estate sectors.

We provide:

  • Up-to-date knowledge in the construction and real estate sectors based on contemporary research findings;
  • Specific specialist skills that are required in the construction and real estate sectors, and beyond the first undergraduate degree level; and
  • The opportunity for students to study construction and real estate practices in the Chinese Mainland.

Characteristics

This programme suits graduates and professionals who are qualified in architecture, building, building services engineering, building surveying, civil engineering, construction management, interior design, land surveying, quantity surveying, property management, real estate or town planning at various levels of responsibility. It offers students the flexibility to choose subjects from the disciplines of construction, planning and development or commercial property.

Recognition & Prospects

The MSc programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as meeting their academic requirements. MSc graduates may apply for the full membership of the RICS based on their appropriate period of relevant work experience in the construction and/or real estate sectors.

Programme Structure

This mixed-mode programme is offered within the Faculty Taught Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Environment. Students can pursue their studies in either the full-time mode or the part-time mode. Depending on their pace of study, they should normally be able to complete the programme in 1 year for full-time study or in 2.5 years for part-time study. Students are required to attend classes during the daytime and in the evening if they choose the full-time mode of study.

For the MSc (30 credits required)

Students must complete:

(a) 7 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 4 Core Subjects, including Research Methods for Construction & Real Estate, AND a Dissertation (9 credits) that is relevant to construction and/or real estate; or

(b) 10 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 7 Core Subjects, including Research Methods for Construction & Real Estate, AND the dissertation replacement subject Professional Workshop & Project (3 credits).

For the PgD (21 credits required)

Students must complete 7 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 4 Core Subjects, including Research Methods for Construction & Real Estate.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an institution that is recognized by PolyU. In addition, you must meet the entrance requirements that are specified by individual programmes. PolyU may accept equivalent qualifications. The decision is made on an individual basis. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet based test or 550 for the paper-based test; OR An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For international students

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours; OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in a construction or real estate related discipline; OR
  • Corporate membership of a relevant professional institution with substantial experience in the construction or real estate sector.

Relevant employment in industry, commerce or public administration is preferred.

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the following minimum English language requirement for admission purpose, unless otherwise specified by individual programmes concerned:

A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet-based test or 550 for the paper-based test;
OR
An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
