What will I learn?

The Master of Science in Information Technology in Education [MSc(ITE)] is intended for instructional designers, educators and professionals, including educational publishers, software developers, tertiary-sector staff, school administrators, IT coordinators and people involved in staff IT training in business settings, who have an interest in ITE and wish to update, extend and reflect on their knowledge and practice. The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, administrative and technological implications of current and new educational technologies. It prepares students to design, develop, implement and evaluate the use of IT in various educational level and settings.

The MSc(ITE) programme has a modular programme structure, including taught modules and an optional dissertation.

The programme extends over one academic year of full-time study or between two and four years of part-time study. There will be three terms in each academic year. The three terms will begin in September, January and June.

Aims

Business organisations (such as multimedia publishers, banks, and corporate training centres), universities, and schools are frequently in need of skilled professionals in applications of information technology in educational and training contexts. This programme offers participants theoretical and practical insights in the application of instructional design principles and information technology tools for learning and instruction.

The programme aims to provide

  • An investigation into learning technology design, e-leadership, e-learning, and other emerging learning and teaching technology applications
  • An opportunity to apply technology in learning and teaching
  • An investigation into adult learning principles and strategies
  • An exploration of the cultural, administrative theoretical and practical implications of technology in education
  • An introduction to research in technology for education
  • An opportunity for those wishing to develop leadership capabilities in the use of technology in education

Mode of study

The programme

  • can be completed over one academic year of full-time study or two but no more than four consecutive academic years of part-time study
  • requires students to take a total of 10 courses in their studies. Over enrollment is not allowed. Full-time students should take no more than four courses in a term, while part-time students should not take more than 2 courses in a term.
  • is conducted in a face-to-face mode supplemented by online learning (e-learning)
  • offers courses across three terms in a year
  • schedules classes normally on weekdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings and afternoons at HKU campus. Some day-time classes will be held on weekdays.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be eligible for admission to the courses leading to a taught postgraduate qualification, a candidate: shall hold a Bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose. English Language Requirements: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL; or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL; or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5; or GCE (General Certificate of Education) - Grade C or above; or IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) - Grade C or above; or Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language - Grade C or above.

For international students

A candidate shall satisfy both the University Admission Requirements and the Programme Specific Requirements as listed below:

1. comply with the General Regulations and the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
2. hold a Bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;
3. for qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, a candidate is required to obtain a score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (internet-based) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); a minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in IELTS; or Grade C or above in either the Overseas General Certificate of Education, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language; and
4. satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination, if required.
