What will I learn?

The main thrust of the programme lies in its design as a broad-based and internationally oriented programme that is tuned in to the fast-changing world of international banking and finance. In particular, the programme covers a wide range of topics such as Corporate Finance, International Macroeconomics, International Money and Finance, International Trade, Investment, Multinational Financial Management, Financial Econometrics, Management of Banks and Financial Institutions, Derivatives, Credit Risk Management, Fixed-Income Securities, Globalization, Accounting, Business Valuation, Financial Statement Analysis, Development of International Financial Centers, Regulations and Compliance and Behavioral Finance. The design of the programme aims to strike a balance between theoretical and practical knowledge, cover both local and international needs and concerns, and give due attention to professional banking and general finance and economics. To ensure that our programme will not only have high academic standing but also good professional recognition, we have invited eminent figures in the banking and finance industry and leading academics to serve as advisors for the programme.

On completion of the MIBF programme, graduates should be able to:

  • Have a strong sense of professional ethics and global citizenship, understand the legal and regulatory environment governing the banking and finance industry;
  • Possess the latest theoretical and applied knowledge in international banking and finance such as resources allocation and capital budgeting, moral hazard and agency problem, asset valuation and arbitrage, risk assessment and management, pricing and using of derivatives, financial intermediation, securitization, exchange rate determination and forecast, international monetary arrangement, economic and financial integration;
  • Demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills; capable of working effectively as professionals in the banking and finance industry and related government or International organizations;
  • Apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to become effective decision makers;
  • Master analytical and quantitative tools as well as key concepts and theories to pursue research degrees in the economics and finance areas.

Career Prospect

Overall, graduates from the programme not only have good job opportunities in the banking and finance industry but also are well equipped for further studies. Majority of our graduates have landed jobs in large commercial banks, local and international investment firms, big-four audit firms, government departments and so on.

Those graduates who decided to continue their studies went on to pursue PhD or MPhil at top overseas and Hong Kong Universities such as State University of New York, University of Birmingham, University of Illinois, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science of Technology and the University of Hong Kong.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from a recognised tertiary institution; and An applicant whose degree is from a non-English-medium tertiary institution should obtain: IELTS: minimum acceptable score of 6.5 or TOEFL: minimum acceptable score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test) or an equivalent score in a recognised test

For international students

Applicants should possess a recognized good first degree in a relevant field, OR a recognized first degree plus relevant working experience, other acceptable and equivalent qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants should normally have a score at internationally recognized English tests with scores equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or above. Applicant may be invited to sit-in an interview for assessment of their English language ability.
