Course info

Summary

The programme provides an opportunity for applied scientists and engineers to pursue an in-depth study in various aspects of materials engineering and nanotechnology. Courses in this programme can also be used to fulfil the "top up courses" requirement for joining the Materials Discipline of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Designed to benefit students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, the programme aims to enable students to acquire:

  • a thorough understanding of the behaviour of materials under stress, the various mechanisms of environmental degradation of materials and the knowledge of various techniques of analysing and testing materials;
  • a well developed understanding of how to manage the selection for the most appropriate material for a particular application, taking into account factors such as economics, functional requirements, environment, processability, reliability, etc;
  • the skills to manage the determination process for the cause of failure engineering components, and to provide suitable strategies to prevent future failure; and
  • the skills to design and fabricate new, novel and high performance nanostructured materials.

Research Opportunity

Students with suitable background can take the “Advanced Research” course (12 credit units), and have the opportunity to conduct world-class research using our sophisticated instruments.

Graduates from this programme have been successful in developing their careers related to materials science and engineering. They have made significant contribution in industry and business sectors.

Professional Career Prospects:

  • Materials Engineers
  • Quality Control Engineers
  • Production Engineers
