The programme provides an opportunity for applied scientists and engineers to pursue an in-depth study in various aspects of materials engineering and nanotechnology. Courses in this programme can also be used to fulfil the "top up courses" requirement for joining the Materials Discipline of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Designed to benefit students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, the programme aims to enable students to acquire:

  • a thorough understanding of the behaviour of materials under stress, the various mechanisms of environmental degradation of materials and the knowledge of various techniques of analysing and testing materials;
  • a well developed understanding of how to manage the selection for the most appropriate material for a particular application, taking into account factors such as economics, functional requirements, environment, processability, reliability, etc;
  • the skills to manage the determination process for the cause of failure engineering components, and to provide suitable strategies to prevent future failure; and
  • the skills to design and fabricate new, novel and high performance nanostructured materials.

Entry requirement for international students

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following programme specific entrance requirement:

  • have a degree in a relevant physical science or engineering discipline such as Physics, Chemistry, Civil / Electrical / Electronic / Manufacturing / Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science / Technology and Building, or equivalent.

Persons with the following qualifications may also apply:

  • a graduate member or a non-member qualified for graduate membership of a relevant professional institution, for example, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), member institutions of the Engineering Council (UK) and other relevant recognized professional institutions.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.
